Description
During the Second World War, the Boeing B-17 was the best-known heavily armed strategic bomber, although with an overall build of 12,677, it was far from the most numerous aircraft of its type. It retained the name Flying Fortress, which it had received from an American journalist when it first flew.
The Boeing B-17F was the first mass-produced Flying Fortress. The most famous aircraft in this series was Boeing's B-17F-10-BO, which was delivered and commissioned on July 15, 1942 to the 324 Bomber Squadron, 91 Bomber Group in Bassingbourn, England. The crew gave him the nickname Memphis Belle after the pilot's friend Lt. Robert K. Morgan. Its fame resulted from the fact that it was officially the first US Army Air Force bomber in Europe to survive 25 missions and was made the star of a Hollywood propaganda film. After this mission, the Memphis Belle and her crew were ordered back to the United States. It was later bought by the city of Memphis and erected as an open-air monument. In 2004 the B-17F was completely restored. Today the Memphis Belle is open to the public again.
